The
unprecedented worldwide expansion of trade and the rapid growth
of industrial sector in many parts of the world have caused a
serious degradation of the environment on a global scale. No
wonder that a
reconciliation of trade objectives with the protection of the environment
is regarded as one of the major challenges facing humanity.
Nowadays, the environmental concerns constitute the integral
part of policies, agreements or legislations that govern
international trade and investment. For
example, stringent World Bank’s environmental standards are
becoming adopted as a minimum requirement for internationally
financed projects. That puts a lot of pressure on many
“emerging market” countries, as they aspire to fruitful
participation in the global economy.
Quite
recently, some Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries
have unveiled their plans to monitor changes in the environment,
enhance the quality of policies aimed at the protection of the
environment, and raise public awareness of environmental issues
through education.
To
assist them in addressing their trade-related environmental
concerns, WTU has decided to launch the Executive MBA in Trade
& Environment.
