World Trade University (WTU) was launched on the occasion of the 3rd United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries, hosted by the European Union at the European Parliament in Brussels, May 2001, engaging several agencies of the UN system including UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the United Nations Development programme (UNDP), the International Trade Centre (ITC); as well as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Commonwealth Secretariat, inter-governmental entities such as the ‘Group of 77 and China’ (G-77); and Various Departments of the Government of Canada.

The Executive Office of the UN Secretary General commended the World Trade University initiative; UN Resolution A/58/487 recognizes WTU’s global platform, the World Trade Forum; the UN Secretary General-through Resolution A/58/319-has reported WTU’s global activities to the General Assembly. WTU has been Federally registered in Canada, and legislated through the Special Charter: World Trade University Canada Establishment Act, which has received Royal Assent.  The Act provides the WTU Canada with the power to confer degrees as a private university. WTU Canada will play a lead role in delivering high quality advanced world trade education programs to students from around the world.

Among others, the WTU works in continuing partnership with the UN Special Unit for South South Cooperation (SU/SSC) within the UNDP; the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) of the World Bank Group; and World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC-UK).
