The World Trade
University Global Secretariat is a global education and public-private
partnership mechanism. It was launched in a special ceremony at the 3rd UN
Conference on Least Developed Countries, hosted by the European Union at the
European Parliament in May 2001. The launching of the WTU engaged major Agencies of the UN System, including the Executive Office of the Secretary General by welcoming 'a partnership between the WTU and the Global Compact'; the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD); the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); the Inter-national Trade Centre (ITC); the World Trade Organization (WTO); and inter-governmental entities such as the ‘Group of 77 and China’ (G-77); the Commonwealth Secretariat; and various departments of the Government of Canada. Among others, the WTU works in continuing partnership with the UN Special Unit for South South Cooperation (SU/SSC) within the UNDP; the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) of the World Bank Group; and World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC-UK). The WTU’s global platform, World Trade Forum, is recognized through UN Resolution A/58/487 and UN Secretary General’s Report to the General Assembly A/58/319. |
